Carving a Canoe Paddle: A Multi-Session Workshop with David Wyman

  • Hutchins Education Center 112 Perkins Street Castine, ME 04421 (map)

Learn how to carve a canoe paddle of your own with esteemed boatbuilder and craftsman David Wyman. Starting with a white pine board, participants will learn the traditional art of carving a personal canoe paddle using simple hand tools. Students will learn to layout a paddle shape specifically tailored to their own height and reach. Under Wyman’s guidance, the class will use draw knives and spoke shaves to remove excess wood, revealing the elegant, balanced form of a custom paddle. This workshop will take place over four sessions, each lasting two hours.

Sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, through Friday, March 27, from 9:30 to 11:30 am each day in our Hutchins Education Center.

Please note: Registration is required and space is limited to 3 participants. Suggested registration is $125 per person with additional tuition options available. All necessary tools and materials will be supplied.

This program is part of the Wilson Museum’s program series Connecting to Collections: Curiosity, Culture, Climate made possible through the generous support of Bangor Savings Bank.
