Built starting in 1763 on Court Street and moved to the museum campus in the 1960s, tours of the Perkins House take you back to life in Castine in the late 1700s and early 1800s. On the lower level, the exhibits in the Perkins Gallery share stories and objects from 19th century Castine, Penobscot, and Brooksville. The Museum Shop in the Perkins Gallery features a curated selection of books for all ages, historical maps and prints, souvenirs, crafts, and educational toys.

Based on smithies from the 1860s, this fully functional blacksmith’s shop comes alive on Wednesdays and Sundays in July and August, when the fire is stoked and blacksmiths demonstrate the process of working iron into tools, hardware, and artwork.

Bagaduce Engine Company

Bagaduce Engine Company
The Bagaduce Engine Company building is home to some of Castine’s early firefighting history. The display includes the “Bagaduce” fire engine, purchased by the town of Castine in 1845, the town’s 1917 fire alarm (which still works!), and other tools of the trade.

Hot Air Pump House

Hot Air Pump House
The newest building on the campus houses an Ericsson hot air engine, a 19th century machine that uses hot air to pump water for domestic, agricultural, and manufacturing use. Work is underway to get the engine running and moving water.

Bake Oven and Bean Hole

Bake Oven and Bean Hole
Learn about traditional cooking methods and sample the results when the outdoor bake oven and bean hole are fired up for programs and special events.

Home and Away Sculpture

Home and Away Sculpture
