Youth Programs

Youth programming includes afterschool programs, drop-in activities during February vacation, programs coordinated with local teachers that are aligned with class content, and more.

February Vacation
Drop-in activities are available for families during February vacation.

Classroom Programs
Recent school programs featured local maritime history and colonial trades.

Afterschool Programs
The afterschool program is targeted for 5th and 6th graders but open to 4th through 8th graders as availability allows. Activities are inspired by the museum’s collection – covering everything from currency to rock art, ropemaking to ancient writing. Reservations required.

Maritime History
A dynamic program about local, 1800s maritime travel where students learn about vessel types, marine tools, and jobs that supported the sailing industry. Students engage in a discussion, a museum scavenger hunt, and hands-on activities including ropemaking. Depending on availability, the visit may commence with a tour aboard Maine Maritime Academy’s Arctic schooner Bowdoin built in 1921.

When I told my dad how cool the museum was, he said that he will take me back there some day.

The museum visit worked so well with our exploration of early Maine, I’d love to include it in my curriculum for next year.

Colonial Tools
An interactive tour of colonial home and building tools exhibited in the museum’s Perkins Gallery. Students share what they notice, think, and wonder about the exhibited items and make connections to present day tools. The tour connects to classroom lessons about colonial Maine and connects with colonial trades such as carpenter, homemaker, blacksmith, farmer, and more.

The students enjoyed seeing the different tools that connected to the trade they were studying. … This experience helped us to meet our social studies standards involving history. It also aligned perfectly with our colonial trade project.
