"Castine Feby 14th, 1856"

Abigail Almira Hawes was forty-seven when she received this Valentine. “Pingree Grove” is in Illinois where Abigail’s sister taught in 1854-5. Perhaps the author of this Valentine is Andy Pingree who, according to Mark Honey’s “Abigail & Sarah Hawes of Castine - Navigators & Educators,” taught in Castine between 1830 and 1840.
