One of the greatest tragedies in Castine’s maritime history was the wreck of the fishing schooner Juliet Tilden. She sank when mackereling off the Magdalen Islands during a storm, September 30, 1867, losing all on board: 17 hailing from Castine, Deer Isle and Penobscot.
The schooner was not a year old when it went down on its second voyage to the Grand Banks. Artist John Gardner shows this model as she may have appeared at launching. One of the artist’s trademarks is setting his models in context.
